☘️🌹My painting Imposter is currently on view @1800_g_cadd through 10/11.

This was the very first painting in this body of work. I was going through a big life shift and felt an urgency to understand myself again. I had taken a break from making art because I didn’t feel honest in my work anymore, and that distance made even walking into the studio feel intimidating.

So I set one clear goal for this piece: to be honest with my work, with myself, and with whoever would see it. I painted myself nude as a way to show vulnerability and reclaim a sense of autonomy and power. I was thinking about imposter syndrome as both an artist and educator, and a childhood memory came back to me—me and my friends putting rose thorns on our noses pretending to be rhinos. Somehow that fear I was carrying started to feel illogical and almost humorous in contrast.

In the composition, I played with the relationship between the man-made (the desk), the human body (myself), and nature (the background). I genuinely had fun painting this, and after a year with this series, I’ve never felt more connected to my studio, my work, and my audience.

From Sept 11–17, I joined the Cuttyhunk Island Fall Residency, Session #2, with 11 amazing artists, @gobbeldigook @dilrubatayfun @_gosha.studio @grace.makes @juliettevaissiere @lindsyhalleckson @studiolisalee @maya.brodsky @shengart18 @tbone10023 @yanabeylinson visiting mentor @chezdeleget , and visiting artist @aleah_chapin.

It was both my first time in Massachusetts and my very first residency, and Cuttyhunk Island felt nothing short of magical. Each day began with sunrise, a jog along the shore, and the sea breeze in the air. Days unfolded to the rhythm of waves and a sky of cerulean blue reflecting the ocean, while nights were filled with endless stars. Avalon, the historic home where we stayed, felt like both a grounding presence and a warm embrace.

The week was a constant mix of learning, adventure, and humility. I’m deeply grateful for the chance to share this experience with such generous, creative spirits. Though it passed quickly, it carried lasting weight—an experience that shifted something within me. I left with a stronger sense of my voice, courage, and the reminder of how trust, support, and encouragement can shape growth.

The residency staff/amazing artists @kevinfordpainter @aimeecharlesworth @claudinelopes.6 @deblm114 and Lisa cared for us with such kindness, treating us to incredible meals, while the Cuttyhunk community welcomed us with warmth—a wave, a greeting, a smile that made the island feel like home. The whole experience felt almost dreamlike, like returning to a grandmother’s house in the countryside, a place familiar yet entirely new.

I carry this time forward as a reminder of connection, bravery, and the joy of living fully in the moment.

This grant will support the creation of symbolic props, intentional settings, and experimental approaches that push my work into new conceptual and aesthetic directions. My goal is to expand conversations around identity, gender, and cultural hybridity while engaging audiences through exhibitions, talks, and digital documentation.

I’m deeply grateful to RAC for supporting artists and the broader St. Louis arts community—this opportunity will allow me to grow my practice and share these stories in meaningful ways. 🙏

This show means so much to me—it’s my first major exhibition since my MFA show at the Kemper Museum in 2018.

For years, I struggled with my relationship to my art, often feeling a sense of dishonesty with my own work. That shifted last summer, when I began building this body of paintings. These works tell deeply personal stories—childhood memories, poems I’ve quietly carried with me since I was little, sources of comfort that I’ve finally shared. At the same time, they reveal me at my most vulnerable, often in the nude, which has been both daunting and liberating.

I’ve come to believe that the most genuine connections are built when we share our vulnerabilities. Through this work, I hope to create that kind of exchange with my audience.

Seeing Folklore installed in this beautiful space fills me with so much gratitude. Thank you to @mnightshyamalan69 and @1800_g_cadd for this opportunity, and to everyone who came out to the opening to support me. I feel recharged and inspired to keep exploring this journey. 🙏🏼💗

Balance was created specifically for this space. When I thought about the nook, I thought about my love of baking—and the space’s strange, portal-like quality. Once a practical spot for a landline phone, now an obsolete relic, it’s been transformed into an intimate venue for art. I wanted to mirror that transformation in my subject: a freshly made cupcake placed not on a plate or table, but directly on the grass. Both the cupcake and the nook live in unexpected contexts, balancing between the domestic and the uncanny.

My booth, titled “Folklore,” is part of this year’s theme: Paradise Lost + Found.

In my work, paradise isn’t a perfect place—it’s a state of mind. I explore it through memory, identity, and reflection, especially shaped by growing up in Korea and living in the U.S. My perspective is rooted in the Asian diaspora—navigating belonging, distance, and transformation across cultures and time. The natural and empty spaces I paint aren’t just settings—they’re symbolic landscapes where memories live, where fear and curiosity coexist, and where meaning is shaped by what we carry with us.

Much of what I’m reaching for is a kind of lost paradise: childhood imagination, cultural stories, and internal quiet that once felt endless. Through painting myself nude—without adornment or externally imposed narratives—I reclaim the body as a site of introspection and strength. That too, is paradise: a return to self, on my own terms.

Color becomes the language of this inner world. Cool tones speak to distance and longing. Warm tones to vitality and searching. Paradise, in my work, is often complex, even bittersweet—but always personal. Always human.
